Title: Topological insulators

Speaker: Prof. Sumathi Rao, Harish-Chandra Research Institute, Allahabad

Abstract: We will give an introduction to a new class of materials – topological insulators – and explain why they are called topological insulators. We will explain how they are similar to the quantum Hall Effect, but without a magnetic field. Finally, we will briefly explain some of our recent theoretical work on how the density of states, charge currents and spin currents in these materials can be computed and measured using polarized scanning tunneling microscope probes.
