Title: We are made of star dust – Heavy Ion Research at GSI Helmholtz Centre
Speaker: Dr. habil. Hans-Jürgen Wollersheim, GSI Helmholtz zentrum für Schwerionen forschung, Planckstrasse 1, D-64291 Darmstadt, Germany
Abstract: FAIR is a new, unique international accelerator facility for the research with anti-protons and ions which will be erected at GSI. Various teams of finest engineers and scientists are working with a thrust to understand the evolution of the Universe 13.8 billion years ago. The Republic of India signed the FAIR convention on 4 October 2010, and declared its contribution to the FAIR accelerator facility. GSI Helmholtz zentrum für Schwerionen forschung GmbH operates a unique large-scale accelerator for heavy ions. Researchers from around the world use this facility for experiments that help them make fascinating discoveries in basic research. In addition, they continually develop new and impressive applications. GSI is the birth place of a new form of cancer treatment that selectively damages tumor tissues while sparing the surrounding healthy tissues. An overview of the experimental technique will be given and outstanding results will be discussed.
